CALL FOR PARTICIPANTS PDF Print E-mail

You are invited to participate in a historical study of the experiences of single women who gave birth at the Royal Women’s Hospital between 1945 and 1975. The study aims to discover what it meant to be a single expectant mother at this time and explore these women’s ability to choose whether they kept their babies or adopted them out. Ultimately, this study seeks to answer the question: “what role was played by the Royal Women’s hospital in these women’s experiences.”

This is in an oral history project and you are invited to share your experiences and memories. Christin Quirk will conduct all the interviews which will offer an opportunity to share stories and reflect on your past experiences.

The themes to be explored are not intended to cause discomfort in any way, although it is recognised that recalling life-events associated with adoption may be distressing for some participants.

Your participation is entirely voluntary and would involve a (60-90 minute) interview on a date that suits you between April and December 2010. In some cases a follow-up interview (60-90 minutes) may be requested. The interview will take place at a mutually agreeable location. To assist in the accurate transmission of stories and ideas, the interview will be recorded. You will have an opportunity to edit your transcript and you may also request an audio copy of the interview for your personal archive, if you wish. Please note that if you become distressed at any time during the initial or follow-up interview, we will stop the discussion and counselling referral will be provided.

The stories you share in the interview will form an important part of the student’s Master of Philosophy thesis. On a larger scale they will contribute to a better understanding of the history of adoption in Australia. The research findings will be shared with the Royal Women’s Hospital and will also be published: a copy of the thesis will be lodged in the ACU national library in Melbourne.

You are, of course, free to refuse consent altogether without having to justify that decision, or to withdraw consent and discontinue participation in the study at any time without giving a reason.

You may choose to use your own name in this study or, if you prefer, to use a name of your choosing in order to protect your identity. All data files will be securely stored at Australian Catholic University for five years after which time they will be destroyed.

Any questions regarding this project should be directed to Professor Shurlee Swain and the Student Researcher, Christin Quirk: (email: This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it ) or;

RALLY JUNE 25TH, 2009 PDF Print E-mail
Written by ARMS (Victoria)
Monday, 22 June 2009 10:46

You may be aware of the recent publicity surrounding the call for an apology to birth parents for past practices which saw thousands of women lose their children to adoption.

We have been working for the past 26 years towards the following aims:

To have our pain and loss acknowledged by receiving a public apology from hospitals and government.

To have current Victorian legislation amended to allow the same access to identifying information as adult adoptees.

For professional ongoing counselling to be made available to those affected by adoption to deal with the mental health issues which can arise following separation from family.

A RALLY WILL BE HELD:

WHEN :  THURSDAY, JUNE 25th AT 12 NOON

WHERE:  STEPS OF PARLIAMENT HOUSE, SPRING
  STREET, MELBOURNE

We would welcome your support.  Should you want to remain anonymous, you can wear a disguise.  This will not only give you anonymity but stress the fact that we still carry the pain and stigmas of the past

Working Party Recommendations to increase support for birth parents at outreach PDF Print E-mail
Written by ARMS (Victoria) Inc.
Saturday, 22 November 2008 18:59

ARMS (Victoria) LogoThe following are a few of the recommendations the Working Party have made;

  • Adoptees provided with more information about the emotional effect on the birth parent when outreach is made
  •  Birth parent to be notified when applicant seeks information
  • More public promotion of adoption issues
  • Creation of a rural strategy to reach those unable to access support in Melbourne

ARMS is seeking your help in promoting public awareness of the support system already in place. We have made available for download an ARMS brochure which we ask that, if possible, you print out and place on your local libray noticeboard, neighbourhood house, medical practice or wherever you think is appropriate in your area.

In this way, we will not only be able to make the general public more aware of issues surrounding adoption, but will be letting other relinquishing mothers know that there is a support service available to them.

If you would like brochures sent to you to distribute, please use the contact form on the left of this page, including instruction on where you would like them posted.

Download the brochure here (in PDF format).
